Shabwa deputy governor and mediator between government and militants, Jaber al-Shabwani, was accidentally killed in this strike, along with at least three of his companions. Al-Shabwani was reportedly on his way to meet with local al-Qaeda leaders to convince them to renounce violence when the missile struck his vehicle. Reports conflicted over whether any al-Qaeda operatives were also killed. U.S. officials later told the Wall Street Journal that they suspected Yemen had fed them faulty intelligence on purpose in order to eliminate al-Shabwani, who was a political rival of the Yemeni government.
